Illinois State vs Iowa Match Preview:
On Saturday at 12:00 ET, the FCS Illinois State Redbirds will play the Iowa Hawkeyes at home to start the season. The Hawkeyes have 19 returning starters, so they will have plenty of seasoned on-field leadership even if head coach Kirk Ferentz will be missing this game due to a one-game suspension for a previous recruiting infraction.
After finishing last season 132nd in scoring offence and last (133rd) in total defence, Iowa supporters are expecting new offensive coordinator Tim Lester to boost the team’s output. However, I’m not sure this transition will occur quickly.
FCS program, but it has a roster full of returning players who are very productive, including six players who are all-conference selections. The Redbirds only lost four players to the portal, but they also added eight FBS transfers. Mason King, the running back, is back after over 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns in the passing game. Even though the Redbirds might not win this game, I believe they have enough players on both sides of the ball to remain within three touchdowns of an Iowa squad that will be playing without a head coach, learning a new offence, and possibly preparing for its Week 2 in-state rivalry game against Iowa State.
